The Friends of History ushers in 2010 and the month of February with a look at several aspects of America's participation in the Second World War.

Starting with the Friday, January 29 double-screening of the classic Hollywood film and the Army documentary that inspired it, both entitled "Go For Broke." The title of both films was taken from the motto of the highly decorated, all-Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team, that counted among its number several Oregonians, many from the Portland area. Both the movie and the short documentary will be shown in Cramer Hall, Room 494 starting at 7:00pm. Free and open to the public

On Tuesday, February 2, Military history expert and PSU History Alum Dick Matthews, will talk about "The Role of Unit Histories within Military History: Putting Memory into Context." He will be reading from his regimental history: "Good Soldiers: the History of the 353rd Infantry Regiment, 89th Infantry Division 1942-1945." Dick currently serves as the Director of Facilities for the Oregon Historical Society. He has an extensive background working with non-profit and historical organizations, including stints as Development Coordinator for World Affairs Council of Oregon, Assistant Director for the Historic Preservation League of Oregon, and Administrator for the Washington County Museum.
