Civil War Round Table

The FOH CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE

The Civil War Round Table is a group of Friends of History members who are dedicated to the serious study of Civil War Issues and who meet monthly at PSU during the regular school year to present papers, hear lectures from visiting scholars and to watch videos and documentaries. A general discussion follows all programs.

Currently, the FOH Civil War Round Table meets on the second Wednesday of each month starting at 7:30pm, unless otherwise posted on this website. Meetings run from  September through June of each year.  After 7pm, parking is free in the PSU parking structures. Meetings are free to current members of the Friend of History who are interested in raising their American Civil War IQ.

PSU FRIENDS OF HISTORY TO PRESENT CIVIL WAR LECTURE ON OREGON SENATOR AND CIVIL WAR COLONEL EDWARD BAKER ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10.

The Friends of History at Portland State University is presenting a program on "Edward Baker: Lawyer, Politician, Soldier and... Oregonian?" on Wednesday, June 10 in Cramer Hall Room 494 starting at 7:30pm

Mark Rothert, a local Civil War history buff, will talk about the research he has done on the London-born Baker who emigrated to America with his Quaker parents at the age of five, grew up and became a lawyer, fought in the Mexican War and became involved with Illinois Politics. He was an old friend of Abraham Lincoln, who named his son Edward in honor of his friend.

When Colonel Baker died on October 21, 1861 after leading his brigade into an ill-fated battle at Ball's Bluff, Virginia; Congress immediately launched an investigation into the first and only death of s sitting U.S. Senator in battle.

Admission to activities of the FOH/ Civil War Round Table and to monthly meetings of the FOH Book Discussion Group are free with membership in the Friends of History. Annual dues are quite affordable, with $35 for an individual FOH membership. Special student memberships are $10 per year, and senior memberships (55 and older) are only $25.00. Current members receive a quarterly newsletter, invotations to special events, authors book signings, local heritage celebrations, seminars and the annual Endowed Lecture held each spring. The 2010 Endowed Lecture welcomes the highly acclaimed author and British historian Sir David Cannadine.
