The State Buildings

The following states had buildings at the Lewis and Clark Exposition: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The State Buildings were not originally figured into the scheme, as it was unknown how many would participate. They sported a variety of architectural styles: California's building resembled a Spanish mission, Massachusetts' building was designed with a colonial theme,

and New York's building looked like an Italian villa. Washington, its building done in the grand Ionic style, occupied the choicest site on the grounds. Idaho's building was uniquely constructed with purely timber and a colored roof.

The visiting states took a great deal of pride in having participated in the successful Lewis and Clark Exposition. Each state had a special day to publicize its exhibit, as did some cities and foreign countries. On New York State Day, August 19, 1905, New York State Lieutenant Governor Bruce in his opening remarks to the crowd stated, "...You have no small Americans in the West, there may be perhaps some in the East, but if one would only make one trip across the country they would certainly become greater Americans."

In New York State's "Report Of The Lewis And Clark Exposition Commission Of The State Of New York," the commission extensively details the state's participation in the exposition and notes the financial, economic, and educational success of the fair. The report reads, "The Lewis and Clark Exposition was one of the most successful ever undertaken...it is too soon at this writing to state what percentage is to be paid to stockholders but it promises to be unusually large." The experience of the State of New York is indicative of similar positive feelings by the other states that attended the exposition. The intent to showcase the West and all it had to offer proved to be highly successful on many fronts.
